With the grandeur of the majestic Drakensberg mountains dominating the horizon to the west and the green and gold of the sub-tropical Indian Ocean coast an easy 90 minutes drive along the N3, Hawklee is a haven of tranquillity that offers a springboard to all that Kwa Zulu Natal offers. There are over a hundred places of interest within easy driving distances of Hawklee along the Midlands Meander – the internationally acclaimed arts and crafts route – plus a host of natural attractions and leisure pursuits right on our doorstep.

Our cottages are designed to give comfort and privacy all feature Jacuzzi spa baths and offer beautiful views over the Lions River. For those special occasions we offer our Honeymoon suite together with Hawklee’s very own dash of extra luxury and pampering.

We offer a Table d'hôte menu in our dinning room with a log fire to keep the chill at bay, as well as a deck with spectacular views where guests can relax and enjoy balmy summer evenings.

The Midlands Meander - an internationally acclaimed arts and craft route - offers over a hundred ports of call, and there is a host of natural attractions and leisure pursuits within easy driving distance, including the largest concentration of historic battlefields in the southern hemisphere, nature and wildlife reserves, and Zulu cultural experiences.

On the doorstep are scenic riverside walks, swimming in clear rock pools, amiable country rambles and rewarding birding opportunities. The more energetic will indulge in cycle touring, horse trails, fly-fishing and the opportunity to play the nearby golf courses.

Hawklee Country House offers thatched accommodation in six spacious free standing luxury double cottages in Fort Nottingham near Nottingham Road Meander. All accommodation is en-suite and features a private romantic Jacuzzi spa bath with a view of the Lions River.

The spacious, individualised thatched double rooms are:


Honeymoon cottage named after the "Mallard" wild duck, the room offers superb river views and features a mezzanine lounge area from which you can relax with an excellent view of the Lions River, a four poster bed gives this cottage a true romantic feel.

Guinea Fowl

 A more secluded thatched cottage for those wanting some privacy, our favourite honeymoon cottage with a garden outlook and private balcony overlooking the Lions River.The Rose: This delightful cottage offers complete privacy and is set in the gardens of the main country house, but does not have a view of the Lions River.

Owl & Pussycat: A spacious cottage set in the gardens, and dominated by an impressive eponymous mural and a supurb view of the Lions River from the Jacuzzi.

Otter & Kingfisher: These two very comfortable cottages both offer Jacuzzi spas and private lounge areas with unmatched views of the river.

Chalet is very private with a balcony over looking the lions river, furnished in white for the Honeymoon feel.

Directions to Hawklee Country House from Johannesburg: From the N3 take the Mooi river TOLL gate turn off on the left, at top of the off ramp turn right and follow the road to a T junction. In front of you; you will see a building with Biltong on the roof. Turn left and follow the road for a quite away into Nottingham town. You will pass the Police station on your right and then you will see an Engen garage on your right. Turn right onto Fort Nottingham Road (Spar will be immediately on your right just past the garage) continue for 10kms on tar road, you will see the Hawklee Country House sign, the road becomes gravel continue straight and travel 3 kms on gravel going over a little bridge. 2nd green gate on your right is the entrance to us. Travel safe and enjoy the journey. From Durban: From the N3 take the Howick /Tweedie offramp. At the top of the off ramp turn left. At the T junction turn right, follow the road for a good few kms passing Piggly Wiggley on the left, Granny mouse on the right continue passing Rawdons on the left. You will see the Juntion on your right and a sign saying Rosetta to the left, follow Rosetta sign under a bridge and immediately turn left to Fort Nottingham ( Spar will be in front of you ). Follow the road for 10 kms on tar which becomes gravel, 3 kms on gravel passing over a little bridge, not far from there we are the Thatch building on the left. Enter by the 2nd green gate to the main building.
