About Buchanan Interiors

After opting out of the Gauteng rat race, Terry and Stella Stevens established Buchanan Interiors here in the scenic Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands of South Africa in 1994 where we provide a full interior decorating service including custom curtaining and re-upholstery and carry a wide selection of fabric sample books.

We moved into our very own premises here in a charming century old wood and iron cottage at the beginning of 2001 when we became part of the Midlands Meander, an extensive arts and crafts route.

Our shop provides the usual decorating accessories like cushions, table linen and lampshades and we have ventured into making pottery and ceramics and small wooden articles like bread bins and some decorative wooden carvings.

Since we started making kiln formed glassware it has just about taken over our lives and is now our main product. Today we manufacture over 80% of the stock in the shop ourselves in the studio and workshop at the main house on the adjacent property.

HANDCRAFTED GLASSWARE

All glassware is manufactured in our studio situated in the scenic KZN Midlands. Each kiln-formed item is individually handcrafted and irregularities merely add to their unique character and no two will ever be exactly the same.

The glassware is created using a kiln and moulds. Some pieces are coloured or decorated using enamel powder, enamel paints, oxides or on-glaze before firing.

We also have a range decorated by the decoupage technique after firing. There are many methods of manipulating warm glass and pieces can be created by fusing glass together, slumping into moulds, draping over forms and/or sagging through shaped openings.

Decoration of the pieces is also achieved by using stringers which is hot glass that is stretched and /or twisted. Applique and inclusions are further methods of decoration.

Over the years we have found glass to be a fascinating medium and we are continually learning something new and hence often have new products so keep watching this space!!!!!

Directions

From the N3 (Durban - Johannesburg Road) take EXIT 99 ( Howick South / Underberg) off ramp and follow the Zeederberg Road toward Howick. Continue past the Merrivale Kwik Spar and the Garage on the left. The road then curves slightly to the right. Immediately after going under the railway bridge, there is a road on the right (Upfold Road). Turn right into Upfold, cross the railway line. At the 'T' junction (Pratt Road) turn right. Follow the road, which turns left immediately (Railway Road). Follow the railway line on your right. . Just before the next railway bridge and stop street, there is a road to the left (Thomas Road). We are #12 Thomas Road in the little corrugated iron house on the corner of Thomas and Railway Roads. The entrance is in Thomas Road (Left into Thomas Road and right into Buchanan Interiors)
